Muir Boda Press Release on Wendy Rosen’s Withdrawal from Congressional Race

September 10, 2012

Muir Boda – Libertarian Candidate for Congress in Maryland’s 1st District

Today it was announced that Democrat Wendy Rosen would be resigning as the Democrat’s Nominee in Maryland’s 1st Congressional District at the request of the Democratic Party of Maryland. It has been alleged that Mrs. Rosen was registered to vote in both Maryland and in the State of Florida and allegedly voted in both states during that period of time. If true, then there should be serious consequences for those actions.

The Libertarian Candidate in the 1st District, Muir Boda, stated, “I do wish to commend the Democratic Party of Maryland for taking proactive steps in this matter. The integrity of our elections is paramount in the democratic process and it is unfortunate that this was not discovered sooner. It is even more unfortunate that anyone would seek office at any level of government and have violated election laws in such a manner, if in fact the allegations are true.

Though not the way I was hoping to be able to provide an alternative to the two major parties, this does provide us with an opportunity. We will now be directly competing with incumbent Congressman Andy Harris for the votes of moderate Democrats, Libertarian Republicans and Independents. Though we may not agree with Democrats on some issues, I believe we can sway votes by focusing on ending the wars, defending civil liberties and educating many on the advantages of free markets in addressing many of the issues that government has failed at regulating.

Medicare Reforms

We find ourselves in a difficult place with the astronomical costs of entitlement programs. For many of my generation, we are coming to realize that these programs will not be there for us if reforms are not enacted – now. Though Medicare was created with good intentions, it was setup for failure from the beginning. It has increased costs, fraud is rampant throughout the system and it is projected to have Trillions of Dollars  in unfunded liabilities in the near future.

If we do not make serious changes to the program now, it will create a financial disaster for government that will be impossible to manage. It will lead our nation to financial ruin and catastrophe. Taxing ourselves to making this and other entitlement programs solvent, well, is like Winston Churchill said, “We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man
standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.”

I have again partnered with the CATO Institute in proposing reforms to Medicare. Michael Cannon and Chris Edwards have put forth a proposal on For the benefit of District 1 voters, I have posted it below.

Medicare Reforms

The federal government subsidizes medical care for more than 45 million elderly and disabled Americans through Medicare. Medicare is the third-largest federal program after Social Security and defense, and it will cost taxpayers about $430 billion in fiscal year 2010.1 Medicare is one of the fastest-growing programs in the federal budget, with spending likely to double over the next decade and to surpass Social Security spending by 2028.2 Numerous studies suggest that about one-third of Medicare spending is wasted.
